A Moment in Time
Memories of filling the wood box for our wood cook stove inspired this figure. We would carry armloads of wood from the woodshed to the wood box in the kitchen. Sometimes Grammie Boothman would ask us to get certain kinds of wood depending on what she was baking.
If she wanted a hot fast fire she would ask for popular. If a hot but longer lasting fire was needed, she would request rock maple or beech.
The wood box served a dual purpose – in late spring when the lambs were born we would always have at least one or two rejected by their mother. So we would bring them inside and they would “live” in the wood box so we could bottle feed them until they were old enough to eat grass and grain. Hmm…maybe another figure?
Our Wood Carrier (either boy or girl) kneels down by the woodpile complete with
handmade axe and loads up an armful to fill the wood box. He or she is wearing
hand-knit hat, scarf and mittens with flannel checked shirt and denim
pants.
