MAKING THE PERSONALITIES
Sara Boothman Glines (Sally), has been crafting with wood since childhood.
Her mother, an accomplished craftsperson, encouraged and inspired creativity in
her three daughters.
Each personality begins with a flat board and a 2” diameter wooden egg. The body, arms, and boots are cut out of the board; then the legs are cut to give the appropriate stance for each figure. Each piece is drilled, doweled and glued to create the different poses. No nails are used. The face is hand-carved into the wooden egg giving each figure its own personality.
Sally’s older sister, Rebecca Boothman (Becky), an accomplished knitter - a skill inspired by her mother - carefully hand knits the sweaters, hats, scarves, mittens and Single Heel Service Socks for the personalities. All patterns and pieces are her original designs. Becky and her family, who make the syrup to go with the Maple Sugarer, live in the house built by Great-grandfather Thomas Boothman in the early 1800’s.
Her younger sister, Susan Boothman Hawkins, (Sue) (1950-2004) the family historian, suggested that the figures represent the family history of the Boothmans, Watsons, and Shoreys. Sue researched photographs and memorabilia for designing authentic outfits, accessories and background information. Sue’s love of history, combined with her artistic talents, provided a wonderful balance for collaborating with Sally and Becky designing outfits and patterns for the collection.
SaraSally Personalities incorporate as many natural and local products as possible. The hair is from fleece of local sheep. Much of the yarn is hand-dyed and spun. All accessories including the snowshoes and all the baskets for the personalities are original designs and are made by Sally and her family.
As our collection is always growing, please ask what new personalities are planned for the coming year.
