A Moment in Time
Maple sugaring was a way of life in our family.
This figure is inspired by childhood memories of working in our family’s maple sugar orchard. Each spring (March & April) dad would ask the neighborhood young men if they would like to earn some extra money by helping out in the orchard. As money was hard to come by, they would agree to work weekends and spring vacation.
They would help tap trees, carry buckets, gather sap, and fill the evaporator firebox with 4 foot wood.
At the end of the season, dad would have them collect buckets, pull taps and wash
and stack buckets. Dad would often call on them to help get the wood for next year’s season.
