A Moment in Time
This personality is modeled after our great-grandfather, Laban
Watson. In the mid- 1800’s, Laban’s family farm began a slow conversion into a
hotel for the growing clientele of path makers and hikers from all over the
country who came to stay for the summer and enjoy the White Mountains of New
Hampshire. The Appalachian Mountain Club was born in the parlor of this hotel, and Laban was a lifetime member of the AMC beginning in 1876.
Laban built the Watson Path up Mount Madison, and was “the principal
builder” of Madison Hut, the first AMC mountain hut. For years he guided his hotel guests through the White Mountains.
The Mountaineering Guide is dressed in sturdy woolen or cotton pants, depending upon the season. He wears a button down shirt that also varies with the season, and suspenders. On his head is a felt cap to keep the sun and the elements out of his eyes. He carries a pack basket on his back, filled with supplies for the hike, and a walking stick to help navigate the steep rock paths. One foot is raised and rests on a granite rock that was selected just for him from the foothills of the White
Mountains.
In the 1800’s and early 1900’s Guides were often hired to accompany women “tramping” through the mountains, protecting them from man and beast. It was
unthinkable at this time in history for women to be “tramping” through the
mountains without a male escort.
