A Moment in Time
Jack loved the outdoors. Most early photos of him are related to hunting and fishing. This probably doesn’t have any connection to his love for the outdoors, but he often told the story of how, when he was quite young, he broke a window in the kitchen of the farm. Every morning that chilly fall, his mother brought him downstairs and dressed him in front of the broken window. The impression was long lasting.
Of the thousands of memories I have of dad, one of my favorites was his love of fishing – fly fishing in particular. Not only did he love to fish but he tied most of his own flies during the winter. I would spend hours watching him tie these beautiful trout flies using materials he had gathered himself. Like deer hair from the deer he had shot that fall or the duck feathers from the mallard duck and the list goes on.
From these memories and photos, I just had to create a figure of my dad going fishing. The “rod” is made from the stem of an iris and the flies are hand tied (some I did and some others did). The fishing creel is the smallest basket I make modeled after the one he used.
