Logger

Inspired by stories and photos of my ancestors harvesting hard wood to heat homes and make maple syrup.

A moment in Time

After all the crops were harvested, the hay stacked high in the hay loft and the house banked with brush to keep out the winter drafts - it was time to start logging.  Wood was cut and prepared for several different locations - the soft wood was sold to the local pulp mill -the birch logs went to a dowel mill in Maine and the hard wood was cut and split for the wood stoves.

Harvesting timber was (and still is) a winter occupation for most North Country farmers.  During the winter the horses would twitch logs instead as well as pulling plows as the logs slide much easier over snow and ice. This was rugged work
snowshoeing through deep snow to fell trees with only a crosscut or buck saw.
The Logger was inspired by stories of my great grandfather, grandfather and
watching my dad working in the woods before I got too cold.

Wood was the main source of heat for the farm and my grandfather and great grandfather had to cut and split 25 cords of wood for the winter. Wood was also a good source of income so during the winter John Boothman oversaw 300-400 cords of wood cut each winter with just a bucksaw and axe.

This figure is wearing a hand-knit scarf and hat, plaid flannel shirt and wool pants.
The Logger carries a crosscut or bucksaw and snowshoes with a cant-dog and is
standing on a tree stump.
